We will depart from Port McNeill harbor between 3:00pm and 4:00pm (depending on sunset times) and head out to our first stop. U'Mista Cultural Centre is located at Alert Bay, on Cormorant Island a quick 30 minute trip by boat.
For the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation, U'mista is the centre of their living culture, their spirituality, art, and language. The U'mista Big House, houses a vast collection of ceremonial masks that were once siezed by authorities in 1922 when potlatch was outlawed. Now some of the confiscated pieces have been returned and can be seen on display in the U'mista Big House. Admission is included in this workshop, but photography is not permitted inside the U'mista Cultural Centre.
After our visit to U'mista, we will head out on the water once again - this time to find the best location for the evening. Our aim is to capture the soft late afternoon and early evening light, set against the beautiful land and seascapes.
This workshop provides an opportunity to practice creative photography with the rapidly changing light situations, for which Rolf will be on hand to provide assistance with composition, light management, and general photography tips.
These waterways are also home to a host of marine mammals including killer whales, humpback whales, dolphins, dall's porpoise, and steller's sea lions just to name a few. A possible encounter with these sea creatures, would further enhance your experience and photo opportunities.
Long light pants or shorts (with a change of long pants), t-shirt, sweater, comfortable walking/hiking shoes, parka in case of rain, sunglasses, and hat. Additional layers should also be considered for the evening, particularly for sunset trips.
This tour operates from July 1st until October 31st, with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 4 passengers.
