Banff National Park Alberta

The Banff National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site by the United Nations in 1985.

The location from which this and other Canadian national parks owe their existence is the Cave and Basin, a cave containing a simmering mineral pool, located in the township of Banff. The Cave and Basin was discovered by accident in 1883 by three Canadian Pacific Railway workers, while prospecting for gold on what is now known as Sulphur Mountain.

In 1885 after much debate, the cave and hot spring system beneath Sulphur Mountain, and surrounding area of 25 square kilometers were protected by the Government and called Banff Hot Springs Reserve. In ca 1887 the Reserve was enlarged to include Devil's Head Lake, which is now called Lake Winnewanka, and the township of Banff itself. This expanded area was renamed Rocky Mountains Park of Canada.

The park continued to grow in size until it covered an area of 6,641 square kilometres (2,564 square miles) and in 1930 was finally named Banff National Park. It was the third National Park to be named in the world.
